A 24-hour urine collection is a simple diagnostic procedure that measures the components of urine. The test is noninvasive (the skin is not pierced), and is used to assess kidney (renal) function.

Follow these steps

  1. Upon awakening on the first day of your urine collection, discard the first urine of the morning. All day and night after that, save your urine in a container.
  2. Open awakening the second day of your urine collection, save the first urine only.
  3. Seal the container and bring it back to the lab you obtained it from.
  4. Refrigerate your urine specimen, or keep specimen on ice during collection.
